Merrick Schools Open New Year with Inspiration and Purpose

The Merrick Union Free School District officially welcomed faculty and staff back for the 2025-26 school year at Superintendent’s Conference Day, held on Thursday, Aug. 28. Administrators, teachers and staff united for an inspiring start to the year, with remarks from Superintendent of Schools Diana Ketcham and Board of Education President Linda Wilk.
Ms. Ketcham, in her first opening day remarks as Merrick’s new leader, expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome she has received from the community. “As we embark upon this new school year together, I’m sure you are all connected by the special memories and accomplishments that you have achieved together over the years,” she said. “It is my hope that we can blend all of that goodness with the fresh energy and excitement that comes with a new year. We are one of the only professions out there that gets to experience a fresh start and a new beginning – each and every year. It is up to all of us to decide what that new beginning will look like, feel like and become.”
Ms. Ketcham continued by stressing the importance of purpose throughout all facets of a teacher’s daily routine, from greeting students and planning lessons to conversing with colleagues and parents.
Ms. Wilk built on Ms. Ketcham’s sentiments during her remarks. “Each new year offers fresh opportunities: to inspire, to grow and to make a lasting impact. That impact is the heartbeat of our profession, the spark we ignite in each student and in each other, the new perspectives we offer, and the love of learning we nurture.” Ms. Wilk also emphasized the Board’s commitment to building on a shared vision of fostering a safe, inclusive and empowering environment where every student can thrive.
The district extends its best wishes to all staff for a successful and purposeful year ahead.
