Birch Hosts Annual Community Read Aloud

Birch School held its annual PTA-sponsored Community Read Aloud on March 19, welcoming teachers, local business owners, politicians, board members, and community leaders for the beloved event.
This year’s theme, “Birch Beavers Are Monster Readers,” brought special guests from the Merrick community into each classroom to share stories with students. School librarian Vanessa Schroeder collaborated with PTA committee members to develop a thoughtful guest list and match each reader with age-appropriate books.
Although the event is typically held during PARP Month, it has been moved to align with National School Library Week.
“We hope to spread the joy of reading many times throughout the year,” said Principal Kerri Galante during the welcome breakfast. “Our students love our library, which Mrs. Schroeder sets up for them every single day.”
The program was enjoyable for students and teachers alike and offered a rewarding, memorable experience for guest readers.
“It’s always special to see students connect with members of their community through books,” said Schroeder. “Events like this help reinforce that reading is both meaningful and enjoyable at every stage of life.”
Richard Rubenstein, owner of Bangz Hair & Color Lounge in Bellmore, read an excerpt from a book about magic before introducing a surprise guest, magician and mentalist Kevin Nicholas, who wowed students in Mrs. Pikowsky’s class with sleight-of-hand card tricks.
Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Technology Dr. Salvatore Dossena read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” while dressed as a butterfly. Students in Mrs. Savino’s class used Velcro food items from the story, taking turns attaching them to Dr. Dossena’s costume as the tale unfolded.
After each read-aloud, students were encouraged to ask questions and learn more about their guest readers and their roles in the community.
