VIDEO: Birch Celebrates Innovation and Creativity at STEAM Day

Birch School recently brought learning to life during its annual STEAM Day, an exciting, hands-on event designed to spark curiosity and inspire innovation across science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
Through a combination of engaging activities and collaborative challenges, students explored real-world problem-solving while strengthening critical thinking skills in a fun and supportive environment.
Throughout the day, classrooms transformed into hubs of discovery as students took part in a variety of engineering challenges, including tower-building activities and interactive BreakoutEDU experiences.
These lessons encouraged teamwork, perseverance, and creativity, key components of Birch’s comprehensive STEAM program, which also includes a dedicated STEAM Discovery Lab and specialized enrichment clubs that extend learning beyond the classroom.
A highlight of this year’s STEAM Day was the introduction of aeroponics towers, a new addition to both the event and the building’s science curriculum. Students planted seeds and observed the growing process firsthand, gaining a deeper understanding of plant life cycles and sustainable growing practices. The two Tower Gardens were generously donated by the Birch PTA, further enhancing opportunities for experiential learning. The PTA also sponsored a Wacky Science interactive show throughout the day.
The success of STEAM Day was made possible through the efforts of teachers Debra Vernice and Trish Germann, who coordinated the event, and second-grade co-teacher Mike Savastano, who delighted students by dressing up as Albert Einstein and staying in character throughout the day to keep the excitement and curiosity flowing.
Birch remains committed to fostering a love of learning through innovative programs like STEAM Day, empowering students to think creatively, explore boldly, and develop the skills they need for the future.
